For seizures in Dravet syndrome or Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, the licensed medicine Epidyolex is approved by NICE and can be prescribed by a neurologist on the NHS for patients aged 2 and over. For other epilepsies that have not responded to treatment, assessment is by a specialist neurologist, usually privately. Whether it is suitable for you is the specialist's decision.

Epilepsy is a neurological condition characterised by recurrent, unprovoked seizures. For most patients, conventional antiepileptic drugs provide good control. However, approximately one third of epilepsy patients have treatment-resistant seizures. Medical cannabis, specifically Epidyolex (a purified CBD oral solution), has been NICE-approved for two rare childhood epilepsy syndromes.

What clinics look for: For Dravet syndrome or Lennox-Gastaut syndrome: Epidyolex can be prescribed via a paediatric neurologist and may be NHS-funded. For other treatment-resistant epilepsies: assessment is via a specialist neurologist on a private or named-patient basis.
